New ACC Cyber Security Guidance Documents Released

By STNews International staff writers
Posted on 02 Mar 2009

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) recently released on the Internet five new guidance documents and two white papers on cyber security, which are designed to help chemical companies strengthen their information technology (IT) networks and industrial automation and control systems (IACS).

Since 2002, chemical industry leaders have come together through the Chemical Sector Cyber Security Program to provide industry leadership on cyber security issues in an effort to help companies operate in a safe and secure manner and facilitate the reliable delivery of products and services. The Cyber Security Program’s six working groups are dedicated to understanding the implications of key issues and trends on the global chemical sector and offering companies access to resources that help them evaluate and elevate their company’s cyber security preparedness.

Chemical Sector Cyber Security Program members created the documents for the benefit of chemical and other similar industries. These publications are available free of charge on the Cyber Security Program Website (see related links below). The information and guidance are in accordance with security codes and help companies to adhere to the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) Risk-Based Performance Standards (RBPS).

“President Obama’s homeland security agenda clearly illustrates his administration’s increased emphasis on cyber security, declaring the cyber infrastructure a strategic national asset and calling on private industry, the research community and citizens to work with the government to protect our information networks,” said Cyber Security Program Director Christine Adams from the Dow Chemical Company. “The Cyber Security Program’s guidance documents and white papers support the President’s plan by providing valuable information to assist chemical companies as they bolster the secure performance of the systems that are critical for running a business.”
